Student Analyst Program

Build what's next in finance

SOF places analysts inside a live event-driven investment process. Real work product under a CIO whose research has shaped the field. Build the paper portfolio track record that determines whether real capital follows.

Program

What students do

The fund's sourcing process surfaces catalyst-driven candidates across the public equity universe. The analyst team takes it from there: company-level diligence, internal pressure-testing, and a collective investment memo delivered to the Chief Investment Officer.

Candidate Analysis

Build a collective investment case on each screened candidate. Conclusions are challenged internally before they reach the CIO. The standard is whether the work is fit to inform a real capital decision.

Position Monitoring

When a position drifts from thesis or a material event occurs, the team investigates and delivers an update within 24 hours.

Quarterly Reporting

Students produce the analytical inputs for LP reporting, a direct line of accountability from their work product to the people whose capital is deployed.

Rhythm

A week in the life

A typical analyst week, from Monday's sourcing digest to Friday's memo handoff.

Weekly digest review

Screen & Intake

  • The week's sourcing digest lands in the team inbox.
  • Analysts review new candidates and claim one for the week.
  • Initial hypothesis and capital-at-risk framing drafted before close of day.

Growth

How responsibility grows

SOF runs a flat Analyst cohort. Scope expands with judgment, not title.

Phase 1

First Semester

Learn the research methodology, shadow live sourcing and diligence, and contribute to collective memos under supervision.

Phase 2

Returning Analyst

Own candidate memos end-to-end. Position monitoring, event-driven updates, and direct input into LP reporting.

Phase 3

Senior Cohort

Co-lead the research process, mentor new analysts, and run internal review sessions before memos reach the CIO.

Mentorship from a top-cited researcher

Analysts work directly under Dr. Jonathan Brogaard, Associate Dean of Research at the David Eccles School of Business and founder of the University of Utah's Institute for Advanced Investment Management. Who We Recruit

Depth over pedigree

SOF draws from the University of Utah and maintains a steady cohort of student analysts. New analysts are admitted each semester to backfill natural attrition, ensuring continuity of process ownership and institutional knowledge across cohort generations.
